Ecuador - Middle of the world - Mitad del Mundo

October 06, 2007 - Permalink - No comments

Only a 1 hour drive from the capital of Ecuador, Quito, is the theoretical line of the Equator. The nearest village is Pomasqui

To commemorate this important geographical point in the world, the Ecuadorian government has erected a huge monument many years ago.

It was initially Pierre Bouger, a geographer, who started a geographical mission to calculate the exact ecuator in 1736.

Since a couple of years, the monument has been upgraded (or downgraded as seen bu others) with a museum, shops, theatre etc. You can easily stay a couple of hours in this location. I liked it anyway.

Mitad del Mundo or Middle of the world is a popular half day sightseeing trip for people staying overnight in Quito.
